Use these three key steps when selecting your oxy-fuel torch.

Choosing the right oxy-fuel torch is essential for optimal safety, efficiency, and quality. Here are three key steps to help you select the right hand-held oxy-fuel torch for your desired application.

Step 1: Determine the Application Type

There are various torches available, including cutting and combination torches. Hand-cutting torches are ideal for cutting carbon steel and come in different lengths and head angles, while combination torches are suitable for cutting, heating, welding, and brazing.

Step 2: Consider the Material Thickness

Torch manufacturers rate their torches based on material thickness. It's best practice to choose a torch with a higher cutting capacity than what you'll normally work with. For instance, Miller® | Smith® heavy-duty hand-cutting torches can cut up to 12-inch thick steel, while Miller® | Smith® medium-duty combination torches can cut up to six-inch thick steel.

Step 3: Determine the Fuel Gas Type

Different fuel gases have varying characteristics, which affect their function. Some torches can only be used with specific fuel gases, while others can use any fuel gas at equal pressure. Miller® | Smith® torches have a three-tube design which ensures gases are separate for in-tip mixing and far from the operator for optimal safety.

By deciding what you want to do with the torch, the material thickness, and fuel gas, you can make an informed decision and choose the right oxy-fuel torch for your application.
