It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has cast a long shadow over the world, and education in particular. To overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19, many welding programs have turned to e-learning in the last two years.

In addition to impacting the way people learn, the COVID-19 pandemic may have also contributed to the national skills gap. Whether faced with the pandemic or the skills gap, the American Welding Society (AWS) has been and continues to be, at the forefront of addressing the educational needs of the industry. For decades, AWS has created content that informs and captivates young people while funneling them into a career in welding or a related industry.

One way the Society has tackled the educational and training challenges faced by the welding industry is through its online courses on AWS Learning (awo.aws.org), which offers an immersive experience that encourages learners to actively think, question, and draw conclusions. To meet the evolving needs of students and professionals, AWS recently launched four online courses that enable continuous learning. This article highlights these new offerings.

New AWS Online Courses

Career Readiness. The Career Readiness online course is meant for anyone looking for a job in the welding field, whether they’re just starting their career, re-entering the workforce, or transitioning to a new role within the industry. Participants will learn about best practices directly from industry experts, such as hiring managers, welding engineers, business owners, and more.

Solution Selling for Welding. The Solution Selling for Welding online course is designed for salespersons attempting to incorporate welding sales into their skill set. It aims to develop highly knowledgeable and effective welding sales professionals. The course covers foundational welding knowledge and the solution selling methodology.

Instructional Strategies for Welding Educators. AWS partnered with Weld-Ed, the National Center for Welding Education and Training, to deliver the Instructional Strategies for Welding Educators video course. Helmed by AWS President Dr. W. Richard Polanin, the course covers the history of education, provides practical overviews of learning theories, and explains techniques that should be implemented in the lab and classroom to make instruction more effective.

Fundamentals of Welding. The Fundamentals of Welding online curriculum is the centerpiece of AWS’s offerings. Geared toward the new generation of welders, the curriculum offers a comprehensive collection of print and digital resources and learning tools developed in partnership with industry experts and education professionals. The curriculum is also aligned with the AWS Schools Excelling through National Skills Education (SENSE; senseonline.org) program, meaning it is built around the competency-based standards needed to create and maintain a quality welding program.
